Surgical Sperm Retrieval

Surgical Sperm Retrieval

Surgical sperm retrieval is a procedure that removes sperm directly from the testicles; the procedure is typically used in conjunction with another fertility process, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). An incision can be made to perform a biopsy or a tiny needle can be inserted into the testicles depending on the treatment. The best option may be sperm retrieval via surgery for those who have had a vasectomy, low sperm counts, or difficulty ejaculating due to injury or infection.

There are various instances in which surgical sperm retrieval could be beneficial in case of:

  1. When sperm cannot be released because of damage or illness, a blockage occurs.
  2. Vas deferens is not present at birth
  3. Vasectomy
  4. Testicular azoospermia occurs when insufficient sperm is produced to reach the vas deferens.

Vasa deferentia are the tubes that transport sperm from the testicles to the urethra. Vasectomy or spontaneous clogging of these ducts may cause clogging. Consequently, sperm cannot reach the urethra and may never leave the male body, even during ejaculation.

A low sperm count may make it difficult for sperm to flow through the vasa deferentia. So, even if your fundamental plumbing is fine, sperm may be unable to pass through the vasa deferentia due to poor quality. Sperm retrieval is a technique that involves pulling and then concentrating sperm to increase motility and density.

Our ultra-modern surgical sperm retrieval treatments at Bliss IVF retrieve sperm directly from the testicles, eliminating the need for sperm to make the lengthy, difficult trek through the vasa deferentia, only to come to a halt.

At Bliss IVF clinic, we use various types of techniques:

PESA - It stands for percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration. The procedure involves removing sperm directly from the epididymis, where sperm are kept after they form in the testes, using a thin needle.

TESE -  It stands for Testicular sperm extraction. It collects sperm via a biopsy or a number of biopsies of testicular tissue following a small incision made in the scrotum.
